Off-white collaborations: has Virgil abloh gone off-piste?

Virgil Abloh has gone from interning at Fendi alongside Kanye West, to founding his first fashion house, to the chief executive of Louis Vuitton within nine years. Now celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Travis Scott and Rihanna can all be seen rocking his designs.

On the Off-White website it states that the brand is “rooted in the current culture at a taste-level particular to now”. So it’s no surprise that Abloh enjoys experimenting within fashion.

Since Virgil Abloh founded Off-White in 2012 he has always tried to push boundaries with his designs, reinventing contemporary streetwear. But how far is too far?

NIKE X OFF-WHITE

Virgil Abloh and Nike have been working together since 2017, when they first released Virgil’s take on the Air Jordan 1. Since then they have released 33 shoes together. These have included redesigns of Air Force 1’s, Air Max 97, Air VaporMax and Zoom Fly’s.

MR PORTER X OFF-WHITE

Virgil Abloh started 2019 by joining forces with MR PORTER for his latest collaboration. The 44-piece capsule collection named ‘MODERN OFFICE’ focuses on putting a streetwear spin on work attire.

The collection, released on January 21, features wide-leg linen trousers, jersey tees, a corduroy jacket and suede-trimmed sneakers.

EVIAN X VIRGIL ABLOH

Abloh was recently appointed as Evian’s creative advisor for sustainable innovation design, and his first release is a refillable glass water bottle. You can find it on our trending page.

The glass bottle is encased in a silicone sleeve and printed with a purple ‘Rainbow Inside’ slogan in quotation marks and seals with a natural bamboo lid.

The bottle will retail for £45 in a limited run via matchesfashion.com.

CHA CHA MATCHA X VIRGIL ABLOH

This is when things start to get a little bit more random.

That one of fashion’s most sought after designers designed some merch for a tea shop. The collection not only featured tees and hoodies, but also cups, sleeves and napkins.

The founders of Cha Cha Matcha, Conrad Sandelman and Matthew Morton, told Vogue how the collaboration came about: “He came in as a customer and we got to talking. We realized we had a bunch of mutual friends, and then we became friends and started talking about architecture, design, fashion, all those things. And at a certain point, you know, we thought, let's do something together.”

OFF-WHITE SILVER BINDER KEYCHAIN

Perfect for when you’re interning.

Off-White have just dropped two binder clip keychains. The keychains come in a neon yellow or a matte silver and retail at £70.

We’re a bit lost on why anyone would spend this much on a clip when we can just go down to WH Smith and pick some up for a fiver?! However, it is nice to see that even when it comes to office accessories, Off-White are still keeping on trend with the fluorescent yellow.

OFF-WHITE JELLY SANDALS

The open toe jelly sandal is reminiscent of our childhoods, but for a cool £150, we aren’t sure we are ready to relive those times.

The jelly sandals feature Off-White’s signature zip-tie along with Off-White™ branding on both the front and back straps. They are available in green, blue and black. Perfect for summer!

MOËT CHANDON X OFF-WHITE

Is a newly designed overly priced Off-White champagne bottle really going to make champagne taste better? Or is this one of those pieces where people buy it just to look at it rather than to drink it? Probably.

The 750ml bottle was priced at $59.99 USD when it was released October 15 2018. There was a 3L bottle too, however the price was never revealed.

IKEA X OFF-WHITE

This collab is so random we just can’t wrap our head around it. Swedish furniture retailer Ikea joining forces with Virgil’s Off-White to release a collection of home pieces.

The most talked about piece was the reinterpreted Frakta bag which Abloh changed to a camel colour.

The collection also included a table, a coffee table, shelving and multiple rugs, with slogans such as “WET GRASS”, “KEEP OFF” and “STILL LOADING”.

In April 2018 Ikea and Virgil shared an hour long YouTube video showcasing the whole collection.

Although the collaboration was first announced in June 2017, no official release date has ever been confirmed.

Virgil Abloh’s Off-White loves to push boundaries and to surprise the fashion industry each new collection. We are looking forward to what else he has in store for us this year, perhaps an Off-White x tesco meal deal collab?
